Abstract

This study aims to enhance the application of components of art in essay writing using public speaking as a medium. At present, only a few secondary school students possess writing skills. Tamil literature component is seen as important component especially in teaching and learning in secondary schools. However, students do not show much interest in applying literature element in essay writing. This study aims to improve the skills of using literature component. Students are more interested to communicate with others and also in listening to their conversation. Students are interested to talk about the current issues in society and the state, specifically. This public speaking technique is considered is one of the effective methods to improve student literary component applications. The sample consisted of Ten female students of a secondary school in Banting, Selangor. Data was gathered by collecting essays written by students and by trans scripting voice recording. Students wrote an essay on discussions, speeches, narratives, interviews, facts, and stories. Essay and voice recording were both analyzed in terms of its usage of appropriate literature component. The finding of the study had shown that the public speaking technique can improve the application level literature in writing and in the oral skills of students. Furthermore, the continuous speaking activity can increase the use of language and appropriateness of its usage in essays.
