Abstract

The existing studies indicate that leadership is a major contributor to the effectiveness of school organizations. The purpose of this study is to identify the leadership styles of school headmaster and the extent to which headmaster play a role in ensuring the excellence of teachers, as well as the factors considered by teachers and headmaster in ensuring the effectiveness of schools in Melaka. A total of 15 purposively selected informants, representing various levels of leadership and experience, participated in the study. This is a qualitative study where data were obtained through face-to-face interviews. Data were analyzed by constructing themes and using continuous comparative analysis techniques. The study identified five main leadership styles practiced by school headmaster and four primary roles played by headmaster in ensuring the excellence of teachers. The research also found three main responsibilities played by both headmaster and teachers in ensuring the effectiveness of the school. The findings of this study are recommended to be used as a basis for the selection and development of quality leaders to achieve the goals of an effective school.
