THE EFFECT OF CHINESE CHARACTER LITERACY TEACHING UNDER LANGUAGE GAMES TEACHING APPROACH FOR CHINESE LANGUAGE SUBJECT IN NATIONAL SCHOOL

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of Chinese character literacy teaching under language games teaching approach for Chinese language subject in national school. Research design ensemble quantitative research where quasi-experimental method is used to answer research questions. Sample of this research are 20 year one students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Wan Kemara and 20 year one students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra respectively. Pre-test is run to determine the student’s current achievement and identify the problems they are facing during the learning process. Experiment will be carried on for 8 weeks. The instruments for this research are pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. Students from controlled group will learn Chinese character literacy under traditional method, meanwhile students from treatment group will learn under language games approach. After experiment, students from both groups will undergo post-test. Marks from both pre-test and post-test are collected to calculate the improvement of student’s achievement for each group. Mean of improvement is calculated for comparison. From questionnaire data scores, mean scores of interests is calculated for comparison. Data is analysed descriptively and inferential. As a conclusion, students who learn Chinese character literacy under language games teaching method are able to improve their ability to answer Chinese character literacy questions.

[Kajian ini cuba mengkaji kesan penggunaan teknik permainan dalam pengajaran pengenalan karakter Cina dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Cina Sekolah Kebangsaan. Reka bentuk kajian adalah kuantitatif. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kuasi eksperimen. Sampel kajian ini terdiri daripada 20 orang murid tahun 1 Sekolah Kebangsaan Dato’ Wan Kemara dan 20 orang murid tahun 1 Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra. Ujian pra dijalankan untuk melihat prestasi semasa murid dan mengenal pasti masalah yang dihadapi semasa pembelajaran. Kemudian eksperimen akan dijalankan selama 8 minggu. Kajian ini menggunakan instrumen ujian pra, ujian pasca dan borang soal selidik. Murid dari kumpulan kawalan akan mempelajari pengenalan karakter Cina dengan teknik tradisional, manakala murid dari kumpulan rawatan akan mempelajari pengenalan karakter Cina dengan teknik permainan. Selesai eksperimen, murid dari kedua-dua kumpulan akan menjalani ujian pasca. Markah ujian pra dan ujian pasca dikumpul untuk dibuat pengiraan peningkatan pencapaian murid bagi setiap kumpulan. Min peningkatan markah dikira untuk dibuat perbandingan. Daripada skor borang soal selidik pula, min skor minat murid kumpulan kawalan dan kumpulan rawatan dikira untuk dibuat perbandingan. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensi. Kesimpulan kajian menunjukkan penggunaan teknik permainan dalam pengajaran pengenalan karakter Cina telah berupaya meningkatkan pencapaian murid dalam menjawab soalan pengenalan karakter Cina. Implikasi kajian ini adalah penggunaan teknik permainan dalam pengajaran pengenalan karakter Cina dapat meningkatkan pencapaian murid dalam menjawab soalan karakter Cina.]
